Cattle market - 1 September 2010
Supply improves
After rain affected markets last week numbers rebounded 28% at MLA's NLRS reported physical markets. All states recorded greater throughput except SA where both Naracoorte and SA LE experienced a drop in supply.
Roma Store sale more than doubled with cattle yarded from the local area along with some large runs from central and North West Queensland. Warwick also had a significant increase with a return to fine weather. In NSW Forbes, Tamworth and CTLX had reduced offerings while Gunnedah tripled and Inverell increased by around 1,000 head as the country continues to dry out.
Victorian markets remained relatively steady with only slight increases at Ballarat and Pakenham. In WA more pastoral calves, yearlings and lightweight bulls were brought forward and locally bred cattle remain very limited. Tasmania also had larger supply after last weeks rain affected markets.
Quality and competition vary
Quality varied across the country with young cattle in some areas affected by recent wet weather and subsequently offered in plainer condition. On the other hand the number of yearlings and grown steers were in excellent condition coming off crops increased and these sold to strong processor competition.
The level of demand varied but with more rain predicted at the end of the week processor and feeder buyers were keen to secure numbers. Average prices for some categories were affected by quality.
Nationally yearling steers sold to solid demand as restocker prices averaged 199¢ for medium weights, C3's going to slaughter averaged 2¢ higher than last week at 194¢/kg. Medium weight grown steers also sold to a dearer trend as heavyweights and bullocks eased 1¢ to 2¢/kg lwt. Medium weight cows eased as heavyweights remained unchanged.
After Tuesday's markets the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) was 0.50¢ lower than last week at 363.50¢/kg cwt. The trade steer indicator was 1¢ dearer at 195¢ and feeder steer was unchanged at 194¢/kg. Japan ox and US cow were both firm at 185¢ and 142¢/kg respectively.

Yardings continue to climb
With the onset of spring following a very good winter growing season lamb numbers are beginning the seasonal increased at MLA's NRLS reported saleyards. Lamb numbers so far this week are 4% higher and sheep yardings are up 25%. All states expect NSW had more lambs and all states had more sheep.
Young lambs now make up half of all the lambs penned with the transformation to predominantly new season lambs likely by week's end. This is quite a substantial jump within the space of the week, with new seasons making up 38% of last weeks penning. The weights of new season lambs have been predominantly between 20 and 30kg cwt, which is a heavier average sale weight than the previous few years. The condition of young lambs has also been very good with plenty coming off crops.
Market shows signs of softening
Indicator prices for restocker lambs as well as trade and heavy weights slipped in value from recent heights, mainly due to the higher availability of well finished lines.
Restocker lamb prices corrected from last weeks spike, slipping back to fortnight ago levels of 547¢/kg cwt. Merino and light lambs gained 3¢, at 494¢ and 510¢/kg cwt respectively.
The eastern states trade lamb indicator finished on 552¢, while the heavy lamb indicator was 4¢ less on 540¢/kg cwt. Despite the hike in supply, the mutton indicator finished 9¢ stronger on 446¢/kg cwt
