Cattle market - 8 September 2010
More rain lowers throughput
Widespread rain in the east of Australia has caused flooding in some areas of Victoria and resulted in national cattle throughput at MLA's NLRS reported physical markets falling 25% week-on-week. All markets in the eastern states recorded a drop in supply as a result of the rainfall except Mareeba, Goulburn, Naracoorte and Killafaddy. Muchea in WA also had a slight increase with the yarding mostly consisting of pastoral cattle.
There was no sale held at Murgon, as Toowoomba Landmark and Ballarat could only manage to yard less than 100 head. Supply may continue to remain tight for the short term with some areas expecting more rain and producers looking to hang onto to cattle to properly finish them.
Quality Improves
Despite the reduction in yardings quality has reportedly improved at many selling centres with more stock coming off crop or being supplementary fed to be presented in finished condition.
Competition was strong at most markets with buyers keen to fill orders knowing there will be a shortage of cattle. Southern processor buyers were active at Roma and a NSW order sourced limited numbers a Naracoorte. One processor and feeder buyer was not present at Wagga which affected some price trends.
Limited numbers helps prices
Limited numbers helped strong competition at most saleyards with finished categories improving in average prices. Nationally C3 yearling steers averaged 3¢ higher at 197¢, C3 heavyweight grown steers gained 5¢ to 187¢ as heavy D4 cows averaged 2¢ higher at 153¢/kg lwt.
At the close of Tuesday's markets the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) finished 5.50¢ higher than a week ago at 369¢/kg cwt. The trade steer indicator lifted 2¢ to 197¢ as feeder steers were firm at 194¢/kg lwt. Japan ox finished 1¢ lower at 184¢ and US cow was 2¢ cheaper at 140¢/kg lwt.

Sheep Market Summary - 8 September 2010
Wet conditions limit lamb numbers
National lamb supply at MLA's NLRS reported physical markets was limited to around 85,000 head, a reduction of 16% compared to last week. Heavy rain and flooding combined to limit numbers in most regions. Sheep throughput also declined as 18% fewer sheep were penned.
NSW lamb yardings dropped 18% as producers found it difficult to supply lambs after some widespread rain over the weekend. As to be expected Victorian lamb supply was 16% lower due to the flooding, with just under 18,000 lambs supplied. It was a simular case in SA where numbers were limited at both Naracoorte and SA LE. WA yardings went against the trend, increasing by 21% as more young lambs came forward at Muchea.
Restocker demand strong
Price trends were mixed in the eastern states as restocker and feeder demand was particularly strong on the scarce offering of store drafts after the recent rain. Restocker lamb prices gained 44¢ on last week to reach a new record of 591¢, while Merino pens continued to sell to strong demand as prices averaged 497¢/kg cwt. Light lamb prices benefited from the extra competition and were 10¢ dearer at 520¢/kg cwt.
The trade lamb indicator remained strong but declined 3¢ - to 549¢/kg cwt as quality was mixed in places due to the wet conditions. Heavy lamb values declined 7¢, and settled at 533¢/kg cwt. Mutton prices were steady across the board to finish at 446¢/kg cwt.
